Back After 36 Years: A New Home Alone Movie Starring Macaulay Culkin Is Coming!
One of the most popular holiday classics in cinema history, the Home Alone series, is reportedly preparing to return to the big screen with its original star after many years. Macaulay Culkin, who transformed into one of the biggest child stars of the 90s with the original film produced in 1990 and its sequel, Home Alone 2: Lost in New York in 1992, is said to be in talks with Disney studios for a new sequel.
Disney has initiated talks with Macaulay Culkin for the Home Alone movie, 36 years after the original.
Matthew Belloni, an experienced Hollywood journalist and one of the founders of the Puck website, reported on his podcast program, The Town, that the actor was recently spotted at Disney studios in Burbank. According to the backstage information shared by Belloni, the studio management has begun discussions with the 45-year-old actor in an attempt to revive the series, and they seem quite keen on the proposed storyline.
It's rumored that Disney has employed a 'one for you, one for us' model in order to persuade Culkin, offering to finance a personal independent project (passion project) he has been wanting to bring to life for a long time, in exchange for his acceptance of the Home Alone project.
Roles Are Reversed This Time: Kevin's Out, Traps Are In
Culkin's script idea presented to the studio takes a surprising twist, flipping the classic formula of the first two films on its head. At special screenings held last year to mark the 35th anniversary of the series, the famous actor described the adult Kevin McCallister with these words:
'In the script I have in mind, Kevin is now a divorced or widowed father, raising a child on his own and has become a workaholic. He can't spend enough time with his child due to work, and his son is increasingly resentful of this situation. One day, after an argument, his son locks Kevin out of the house. As Kevin tries to get back in, his son starts setting up unimaginable traps against him. The house is actually a symbol of the relationship between father and son; as Kevin overcomes the traps outside, he is trying to find the way to his son's heart step by step.'
This approach transforms the clever child theme, who protects the house against burglars in the original films, into a struggle to repair the emotional bond between father and son this time.
After the second film made in 1992, the Home Alone series continued without Culkin; the sequel films with a changing cast and most recently the 2021 Disney+ content Home Sweet Home Alone could not come close to the success of the first films. Culkin, who preferred to stay away from the character of Kevin McCallister and the pressure of the media he experienced in his childhood for a long time, has been portraying a more reconciled profile with this role in recent years. The actor, who humorously revived the character in Google Assistant, Uber Eats, and Home Instead commercials, has been met with intense interest from fans.
Macaulay Culkin, who is experiencing a second spring in his career recently, is making a name for himself with projects like American Horror Story, Fallout, and most recently Zootopia 2, in which he is part of the voice cast.
Should Disney decide to reboot the Home Alone series, which breaks viewing records on streaming platforms every Christmas, under Culkin's leadership, the project is expected to be one of the biggest nostalgia moves of the next few years.
