This is story is about someone I met at work. Some of the details have been changed slightly to maintain confidentiality. John left school and trained as a long distance lorry driver. He valued his freedom and did not want to work in one place with his boss “breathing down his neck”. He also enjoyed driving. Trucking seemed the ideal job. John worked as a trucker for 6 years. He enjoyed the freedom of the road. However, John was not enjoying the rest of the job as much as he hoped. Something was missing. While at a truckers stop, John read an article about people making career changes in a magazine. This was the catalyst he needed. After some serious thinking, he decided that he missed being with other people on a regular basis. He also wanted to help others in a more direct way. John took action. He enrolled on a part time psychology course, a subject he had always been interested in. He enjoyed the comradeship of working with his fellow students. Through his study he developed an interest in mental health. Over the course of the next 4 years John went on to train as a mental health nurse. John now says that he has found his ideal job. He is working as a community mental health nurse. He is helping people in an area of personal interest. John works as part of a team but also has autonomy in his job. And he still has the freedom of the road travelling around a rural community! Incidentally, I now know a nurse who wants to beome a trucker! But that's another story.... Moral of the story... There are lots of “Johns” out there who realise something is wrong but are not sure what it is (maybe you are one of them). This is where clarifying your values can really help. What is really sad is that some people realise something is wrong, they even know what it is, but they just never take any action……
