Street cats can be found in almost every corner of Istanbul, from the Historic Peninsula to the shores of the Bosphorus, and have long been seen as an integral part of the city’s identity. They’re also among the most beloved sights for visitors, who can’t resist snapping photos of them.

A user named “tialcats” shared a travel video featuring two cats visiting Istanbul. Wearing their leashes, the pair explored the city known as the “cat capital of the world,” stopping to enjoy treats by the Bosphorus and pose among historic landmarks and carpets. The trip ended with dinner overlooking the scenery and left every travel video we’d seen before looking ordinary.

What’s it like to travel with a pet?

For anyone hoping to travel with a pet, the most important preparations begin well before the flight. Many airlines allow only cats, dogs and small songbirds in the cabin. The animal must weigh no more than 8 kilograms, including its carrier, which must be no larger than 23 centimeters high, 30 centimeters wide and 40 centimeters long. Only specially designed soft-sided carriers are permitted in the cabin, and your pet must remain under the seat in front of you throughout the flight.

Pets that exceed these limits travel in the aircraft’s cargo hold. Their crates must be hard-sided and fitted with side-locking mechanisms, and the animal must wear a collar. Pets weighing more than 50 kilograms with their crate, or exceeding 75 × 75 × 125 centimeters, are transported through Turkish Cargo. Pet travel fees are not covered by your free baggage allowance, so you’ll need to pay them on top of your ticket price.

For international trips, getting the paperwork in order is just as important as choosing the right carrier. Depending on your destination, you may need a microchip, a valid rabies vaccination and a veterinary health certificate. The required waiting period after vaccination and the rules for certifying the documents can vary from country to country, so before booking, check the latest requirements with both your airline and the destination country’s agricultural and veterinary authorities. In short, getting everything ready in advance can make the journey—and those first moments at your destination—much easier for both you and your pet.
