15 Celebs Who Are Totally Ok With Not Having Kids!

-

The decision to have a child is highly subjective—some people invest heavily in a traditional trajectory, while others find that these so-called societal norms don’t necessarily suit their lives. And for a number of celebrities, that decision has been to not have kids.

Here are some of them we listed for you!

1. Ellen De Generes

"We'd probably be great parents. But it's a human being, and unless you think you have excellent skills and have a drive or yearning in you to do that, the amount of work that that is and responsibility — I wouldn't want to screw them up."

2. Helen Mirren

She was turned off to the idea of having kids thanks to a film she was shown in school. "They sat us all down, boys and girls, all about 13, 14 years old in this horrible school hall. And then this tweed-skirted dykey sort of woman, short cropped hair, comes on and says, 'I'm Dr. Joyce' or whatever, 'and what you're about to see is one of the greatest miracles. I've seen it many times you know because I'm a doctor and giving birth is one of the most beautiful things,'" Helen told once. "I swear it traumatized me to this day. I can't look at anything to do with childbirth. It absolutely disgusts me." Well, there you have it.

3. Rachel Ray

“I think that I’m 40 years old, and I have an enormous amount of hours that have to be dedicated to work,” she said. “For me personally, I would need more time to feel like I’d be a good mom to my own child. I feel like a borderline good mom to my dog. So I can’t imagine if it was a human baby….I feel like it would be unfair, not only to the child but to the people I work with.”

4. Kim Cattrall

The "Sex and the City" star has admitted that—much like her signature character Samantha Jones—she's not suited for motherhood. "When I answered those questions regarding having children, I realized that so much of the pressure I was feeling was from outside sources, and I knew I wasn't ready to take that step into motherhood," the actress wrote on Oprah.com. "Being a biological mother just isn't part of my experience this time around."

5. Chelsea Handler

In an interview with a talk show, the late night host admitted that she didn’t think she’d be a great mother. She didn’t want to have kids and then have them be raised by a nanny due to her own busy career.

6. Jon Hamm

Kids aren't in the cards for this "Mad Men" star and his longtime actor/producer girlfriend. "I'd be a terrible father!" Hamm told. "I see my friends who have children and I'm like, 'Dude, how are you even upright, much less here at work at 6 a.m.?'"

7. Betty White

"No, I've never regretted it. I'm so compulsive about stuff. I know that if I had ever gotten pregnant, of course, that would've been my whole focus. But I didn't choose to have children because I'm focused on my career and I don't think as compulsive as I am that I could manage both."

8. Oprah

"If I had kids, my kids would hate me. They would have ended up on the equivalent of the Oprah show talking about me; because something [in my life] would have had to suffer and it would've probably been them."

9. Jennifer Aniston

"I don't like [the pressure] that people put on me, on women — that you've failed yourself as a female because you haven't procreated. I don't think it's fair. You may not have a child come out of your vagina, but that doesn't mean you aren't mothering — dogs, friends, friends' children. This continually is said about me: that I was so career-driven and focused on myself; that I don't want to be a mother, and how selfish that is."

10. Sarah Silverman

"I want to have kids when there's nothing else I want more, and I can make them my world. I figure I'll be a super-young-grandma age when I have kids. Grandparents are way more laid-back anyway. I'll just go straight to grandmother-hood, like Diane Keaton."

11. Cameron Diaz

"It's so much more work to have children. To have lives besides your own that you are responsible for — I didn't take that on. That did make things easier for me. A baby — that's all day, every day for eighteen years ... Not having a baby might really make things easier, but that doesn't make it an easy decision. I like protecting people, but I was never drawn to being a mother."

12. Ashley Judd

"I figured it was selfish for us to pour our resources into making our 'own' babies when those very resources and energy could not only help children already here but through advocacy and service transform the world into a place where no child ever needs to be born into poverty and abuse again. My belief has not changed. It is a big part of who I am."

13. Jay and Mavis Leno

The late-night talk show host and wife of over 30 years have said that they never planned on having children. "I had made up my mind when I was little that I would never get married or have children, so I had no agenda," Mavis told the LA Times in 2009 (although she and Jay eventually did end up tying the knot, in 1980).

14. Kylie Minogue

Minogue, who is engaged to 29-year-old British actor Joshua Sasse, said that she's come to terms with the "saddening" prospect of never becoming a mom. "I’ve had to face that for a long time," she said, explaining that chemotherapy caused her fertility issues, as well as her age. “When cancer strikes, you really have to consider all of that.”

15. Renée Zellweger

She played the ultimate singleton in the Bridget Jones movies and, whether or not marriage is in Renée Zellweger’s future, parenthood is not. She once said: “Motherhood has never been an ambition. I don’t think like that.”
