You can see the bones and skulls neatly stacked in this catacomb under the city of Paris. The cemeteries in Paris were overcrowded in the 18th century and stacking the dead underground was the solution to manage the overcrowding.

Today, the catacombs are a famous tourist attraction.

2. The Mummies of Guanajuato, Mexico

These mummies are naturally mummified bodies interred during the cholera  epidemic that took place in Guanajuato in 1833. They were discovered in one of the cemeteries of the city and attract millions of tourists now.

Banwell Bone Cave, which is open for only four days a year, takes us to a rare era in the past.  There are bones of prehistoric animals in this cave, which was accidentally discovered by mine workers in 1824. Believed to be from the Pleistocene era (80,000 years ago), the species found were similar to those found in the Arctic Circle today (bison, otter, wolf, arctic hare, reindeer, northern vole, red fox, arctic fox and brown bear).

The Capuchin Catacombs of Palermo preserves approximately 8,000 mummified bodies of nobles, bourgeois, and representatives of the clergy, from 1500 until the end of the 19th century.

The exhibition at the Mütter Museum of College of Physicians of Philadelphia consists of dried human body parts. "We don’t sugarcoat or glorify anything,” says curator Anna Dhody. The authentic human head was created in early the 1930s, while the “Soap Woman” mummy is the body of a woman who died sometime in the 19th century and was buried in soil with chemical properties that turned her into soap.

This cemetery is located 18 miles south of the city of Nazca and preserves the mummies of people who lived and died in the pre-Hispanic era. Thanks to the dry weather conditions in the Peruvian Desert, the bodies are still in good condition. The bodies were clothed in embroidered cotton and then painted with a resin and kept in purposely built tombs made from mud bricks.

Due to a volcanic explosion that took place at Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD, the city of Pompeii was buried in 20 feet of volcanic ash. These historic remains attract many tourists. During the excavations plaster casts were placed on the locations where people died, which allowed the archaeologists to find out the exact positions they died in.

If you visit these artificial islands, which are called 'chinampa' in Spanish, you are very likely to see dolls hanging from the tree branches.  The dolls were originally placed to keep the evil spirits away. This place is now a tourism paradise!

In this Gothic structure, there is a Baroque period bone chandelier that hangs from the ceiling. Although Sedlec Ossuary (bone room/chapel) was built in the 14th century, its current decoration is made of some 40,000 human remains from the 18th century.

This thick and beautiful forest, which is located at the base of Mount Fuji, is also known as the 'suicide' forest in Japan. Considering the great number of people committing suicide, this alternative name actually makes sense, but now it is believed that there are evil spirits in this forest. Upon entering the forest, an official sign reads, “Your life is something precious that was given to you by your parents,” while a second sign reiterates, “Meditate on your parents, siblings and your children once more. Do not be troubled alone.”

These mummies, which are also known as the 'fire mummies' are located near the mountainous slopes of Kabayan. The mummification process includes drying out the corpses of their loved ones over an open flame. Most of these mummies remain untouched.

Capela dos Ossos (chapel of bones) were built by Franciscan monks between 1460 and1510. Bones from 5,000 people were used in the construction. The chapel is located directly next to the entrance of the Church of St. Francis in Evora, 60 miles south-east of Lisbon.

The mummies in the tomb of the Capuchin monastery belong to monks and religious supporters that died at the end of the 18th century. Thanks to a special ventilation system and the rock composition, some of the bodies have become naturally mummified.
